As a booktuber, I feel like I regularly get asked if I also want to be an author. The answer is complicated. I’ve been writing for practically my whole life. When I was much younger, that was fiction and poetry, but in my adult years, it became blog posts and reviews and analysis. I haven’t really written fiction in a long time. While writing a book is something I daydream about, I’m not sure I have a story in me. And it isn’t something I’m currently working toward.

I do edit and review fiction, however. And in doing so, I’ve learned so much about what makes a book work for me. The opposite is also true– I can spot the hallmarks of a bad book from a mile away.

Today, I wanted to share with you some writing tips. Specifically, these are ones that were taught to me by some pretty terrible books.
