Below is a list of editing and sensitivity reading services that I offer. Note: these are different than the (never, ever paid) reviews I do for published books. These services are meant for authors with works in progress.
My Experience:
PROFESSIONAL: Essentially, I’ve made a career of producing effective communications of all sorts. I have a Bachelors Degree from the University of Florida in Communications. I’ve worked as a newspaper editor, a copywriter and a translator, positions that have most certainly equipped me with the skills to both consider the big picture and zero in on the details.
ADDITIONAL: I’ve been reviewing books and other media for the past 10 years. For an idea of my in-depth and critical style, check out my reviews on YouTube. I’d only note that my editing notes are more critically constructive, with an emphasis on positively helping you strengthen your work. I’m a lifetime reader, racking up 100+ books per year across all genres and categories, and hopefully that kind of practical experience is also why you are here.
Rates:
SENSITIVITY READING: During a sensitivity read, my focus will be a full read-through of your manuscript while checking for problematic content as it pertains to my marginalized identities. Those identities are: Black, biracial, bilingual, Latinx/Hispanic, immigrants/immigration, and anxiety.
General (starting at $0.009 per word)
After a full read-through of your manuscript, I will provide you with a feedback letter to include the following information: my general impression, any identified problem areas, suggestions and possible revision ideas.
Delivery: 2 weeks for 50k, based on availability
Line Edit (starting at $0.03 per word)
As I read through your manuscript, I will provide in-line comments to highlight exact areas where there are issues and how they track throughout the story. Additionally, you will also receive a feedback letter to include the following information: my general impression, any identified problem areas, suggestions and possible revision ideas.
Delivery: 4 weeks for 50k, based on availability
EDITING SERVICES: My editing style truly focuses on details and how all of your smaller parts make up your story as a whole. I’m great at noticing patterns, honing in on word choice, sentence structure and style, and commenting on how your plot, setting and characters work in conjuncture. Please note that editing services do not include sensitivity reads. I will not necessarily comment on what elements may or may not be problematic if I see them.
Beta Critique: (starting at $.007 per word)
This level of editing is intended for books already in the later stages of completion that require a general critique. After a full read-through of your manuscript, I will provide an editorial letter detailing general impressions, strengths and weaknesses.
Delivery: 2 weeks for 50k, based on availability
Developmental Editing: (starting at $0.01 per word)
This level of editing in intended for books in earlier stages of development that require a more in-depth critique in order to polish the following areas: plot, character, setting, world-building, pacing and story-telling voice/style. After a full read-through of your manuscript, I will provide an editorial letter addressing each of the previously stated areas and any additional commentary on general impressions, strengths and weaknesses.
Delivery: 3 weeks for 50k, based on availability
Line Edit: (starting at $0.03 per word)
This level of editing is intended for books that have a strong plot foundation but require a style critique in order to address the following: word choice, sentence structure, rhythm, dialogue, imagery, etc. After a full read-through of your manuscript, you will receive in-line edits with grammar, spelling, and punctuation corrected using Microsoft Word’s track changes feature. Additional line-notes will be inserted as comments. I will provide a small recap of my general impressions of the story, though the focus of this package are the individual comments.
Delivery: 4 weeks for 50k, based on availability
